Military Spouse

Mrs. Ellyn Dunford is a dedicated advocate for military families and a retired physical therapist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience. A native of the Boston area, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Simmons College before relocating to northern Virginia, where she met her husband, General Joseph F. Dunford Jr., USMC (Ret.), the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Over their 38 years of marriage, the Dunfords have navigated 20 moves across six states, raised three children, and supported one another through numerous deployments during both peacetime and war.

Mrs. Dunford’s professional career began in trauma and acute care, but she spent the majority of her time specializing in pediatric physical therapy. Her work provided her with deep insight into the challenges faced by Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) families, children with special educational needs, and Wounded Warriors.

From 2015 to 2019, during her tenure as the Spouse of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mrs. Dunford expanded her involvement with military-focused nonprofits and government agencies, gaining a broader perspective on the support systems and advocacy needed for service members and their families.

She continues to be a passionate volunteer, having served with numerous spouse clubs, Family Readiness Programs, and as an advisor to military family service organizations. She is also a proud Nana, and enjoys running, reading, exercising, and giving back to the community. Now, alongside her husband in retirement, she remains committed to advancing the well-being of military families through ongoing work with various non-governmental organizations.
