Service, Sacrifice, and the Strength to Keep Going

Master Sergeant Joe dedicated his military career to protecting his fellow service members, often putting himself in harm’s way to ensure the safety of others. While conducting a post-blast investigation in Afghanistan, he stepped on an undetected pressure plate, triggering an explosion that forever changed the course of his life. The blast claimed both of his legs and one arm, leaving him with severe physical injuries and the enduring invisible wounds of war.

After retiring from service, Joe faced the daunting reality of navigating daily life with these challenges—learning to adapt to new physical limitations while also managing the effects of PTSD.

Service Dog Apollo Recipient

In his journey toward healing, one constant source of strength emerged: his service dog, Apollo. Specially trained to provide essential mobility assistance, Apollo also serves as Joe’s grounding force during moments of anxiety and flashbacks.

Their partnership is built on mutual trust, loyalty, and unconditional love. Apollo doesn’t just help Joe stand and move—he helps him reclaim his independence, dignity, and confidence in the world. Whether guiding him through crowded spaces, retrieving needed items, or simply offering quiet companionship, Apollo gives Joe the freedom to live more fully. Together, they have forged an unbreakable bond, proving that healing is not only possible, but stronger when shared.
