Captain U.S. Air Force (Ret.)

Retired U.S. Air Force Captain Nathan B. Nelson is a decorated intelligence officer whose career was defined by leadership at the highest levels of special operations and extraordinary personal sacrifice. Known for his dedication, strategic expertise, and unwavering service, Nathan’s story is one of both exceptional military accomplishment and enduring resilience.

Nathan began his Air Force career in 2006 as an intelligence analyst and senior leadership briefer for Air Mobility Command (AMC). In 2011, he earned his commission through Officer Training School (OTS) and transitioned into Intelligence Officer training.

He went on to serve as the Director of Intelligence for the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron (22 STS) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he provided operational intelligence support to some of the nation’s most elite special operators. Later, Nathan was assigned to the 720th Special Tactics Operations Support Squadron at Hurlburt Field, participating in the Air Force’s only MAJCOM-level intelligence intern program—a testament to his tactical expertise and strategic impact.

While on his third deployment to Afghanistan, Nathan sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury from an indirect fire attack, leaving him paralyzed. After returning home, he began a long and challenging journey of rehabilitation and recovery. He medically retired from the U.S. Air Force in November 2015.

Today, Nathan lives with quadriplegia, yet continues to lead a life of purpose and service. He remains deeply involved in the veteran community, using his voice to advocate for accessibility, adaptive innovation, and the well-being of wounded warriors.
