JoAnne S. Bass served in the United States Air Force for over 31 years, culminating in her historic selection as the 19th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force in August 2020. She became the first woman in U.S. military history to serve as the highest-ranking senior enlisted leader in any branch of the Armed Forces—a groundbreaking achievement that established her as a trailblazer and role model to service members across all branches.
During her tenure, she led efforts to modernize the enlisted force, improve quality of life for Airmen and their families, and strengthen the voice of the enlisted corps at the highest levels of military leadership. She retired from active duty in March 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and transformation.
Following her retirement, JoAnne continues to serve the military and veteran community through a number of influential roles. She is the Honorary Board Co-Chair of the Women in Military Service for America Foundation, a Strategic Advisor to the President of Columbia Southern University, an Adjunct Senior Fellow at a national security think tank, and a self-employed strategic advisor focused on leadership, national security, and military advocacy.
Her lifelong commitment to service remains steadfast. JoAnne’s dedication to supporting service members, veterans, and their families continues through her ongoing work, including her role with the Robert Irvine Foundation, where she looks forward to advancing initiatives that honor and empower those who serve.
