Michael Matracia

Police Officer
For over three decades, Officer Michael Matracia has exemplified pride, courage, and resilience in his law enforcement career with the Providence Police Department. A graduate of the 53rd Providence Police Training Academy in 1990, Officer Matracia fulfilled a lifelong dream when he took the oath to serve and protect the people of Rhode Island’s capital city.
Throughout his distinguished career, Michael held several prestigious assignments, including his role on the Executive Security Team for then-Mayor Vincent A. Cianci. During this time, he had the honor of working with the United States Secret Service and attending the 42nd Presidential Inauguration, escorting Mayor Cianci and staff through a historic and unforgettable week in Washington, D.C.
It was during that very trip that Michael experienced the first symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)—a moment that would eventually reshape the course of his life and career. Diagnosed in 1998, he continued to serve the city with determination and grace, even as his physical challenges progressed. In 2004, Michael began using a wheelchair—becoming a symbol of strength and adaptability for his department and community.
Despite MS, Michael remains a dedicated public servant, currently serving in the Administration Bureau as the department’s ADA Coordinator. His firsthand experience navigating the world with a disability has given him a powerful voice in shaping accessibility policies, training programs, and inclusive practices within law enforcement across the state.
Michael’s advocacy extends far beyond his badge. He serves on numerous boards, including the MS Dream Center of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Council on Assistive Technology, the Rhode Island Developmental Disabilities Council, and Ocean State Center for Independent Living, among others. His tireless efforts focus on community connection, disability advocacy, mental health, employment, and inclusive education and healthcare access.

The iBOT helps him continue his vital work, attend public events, mentor future officers, and stay involved in his most important role of all—father to twin sons, Zachary and Brendan, his greatest inspiration.
Michael’s journey is a profound testament to purpose, perseverance, and service. Through every challenge, he remains committed to opening doors—both literally and figuratively—for others living with disabilities, ensuring a more inclusive and empowered future for all.
