Michael Schlitz

Associate VP of Military, Veteran & First Responder Outreach
Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Michael Schlitz is a decorated U.S. Army veteran, inspirational speaker, and fierce advocate for veterans and first responders. As Associate Director of Military, Veteran & First Responder Outreach at the Robert Irvine Foundation, he brings unmatched personal experience and heartfelt dedication to supporting those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.
Michael proudly served in the United States Army for 14 years, holding multiple leadership positions from Rifleman to Platoon Sergeant. Over the course of his career, he was awarded numerous honors and decorations in recognition of his service, professionalism, and commitment to duty.
In February 2007, while conducting a routine road-clearing mission in Southern Baghdad to identify improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Michael’s life was forever changed. An explosive device—two artillery shells rigged to a propane tank—detonated near his vehicle. The blast killed his driver, gunner, and medic, and left Michael with catastrophic injuries. He sustained burns over 85% of his body, lost both hands, and permanently lost vision in his left eye.
Despite these devastating wounds, Michael emerged from his recovery with a renewed sense of purpose. In his own words, he has dedicated his life to “living a better life for the friends [he] lost that day—a life they would be proud of.” His story of resilience, healing, and service has inspired thousands across the country.
Since his injury, Michael has made it his mission to give back to the veteran and first responder communities. He has traveled extensively as a motivational speaker, sharing his journey and raising awareness about the needs of wounded warriors and their families. He has testified before Congress on veteran-related issues, supported the launch of multiple nonprofit organizations, and returned to Iraq three times to mentor both wounded and non-wounded service members—bringing hope and perspective to those still navigating their own transitions.
Michael joined the Robert Irvine Foundation not only as a team member but also as a Foundation Ambassador, using his platform and lived experience to deepen the Foundation’s outreach and amplify its impact nationwide. His presence serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, service, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
